Supercharging - How It Works

A Supercharger is a device that when fitted to an engine can increase the amount of air delivered to the combustion chamber. More air means more oxygen and combined with the correct fuel ratio this equates to more power.

Put simply a 3 litre engine supercharged to double atmospheric pressure (approx 15lb) will have the ability to produce the power of a 6 litre engine yet retain the economy of a 3 litre engine under normal cruise conditions.

You can effectively double the power output of a given engine.

Types of Superchargers

The most common superchargers for automotive use are

  • Roots type - Eaton - Harrop - Yella Terra there are favoured by the OEMs such as Mercedes, Jaguar & Ford.
  • Twin Screw - Sprintex, Whipple, lyshalm. these are very efficient and have the ability to develop higher boost
  • Centrifugal - Paxton, Vortex, Rotrex. These have been popular for aftermarket use due to their size and simplified fittment. The quietest, smallest, and most efficient is the Rotrex unit. The increase boost relative to engine RPM and therefor have no effect at low revs, moderate boost in the mid range with big boost and big power gains at the top end.
  • Turbocharger - this is also a centrifugal compressor but is exhaust gas driven. Popular with car manufacturers and aftermarket, creates great peak power however correct matching is critical to reduce turbo lag, other disadvantages include cold start emissions and high under-hood temperatures, especially on petrol engines.

Supercharging is the best form of performance enhancement for any vehicle ensuring big power gains, excellent economy and smooth responsive drivability.
