Bullet Diesel is proud to offer
the complete range of the 6.5
Chev & 6.6 Duramax diesel
engines, brand-new and also
factory remanufactured.
These engines are the perfect
solution for those looking to
find more pulling power for
towing or off-road applications.
They also are the preferred
option for re-powering your
current 4WD, or replacing your
expired factory engine.
Bullet Australia manufactures a
supercharger package that works
brilliantly on the 6.5 engine,
delivering awesome amounts of
torque and throttle response.
6.5L CHEV DIESEL
Originally designed as a
‘workhorse’ engine by GM
division Detroit Diesel, this
light truck engine was fitted to
Chevrolet & GMC pick-up trucks
and SUV’s including the Suburban
from 1982 until 2000, at which
time this engine was replaced by
the 6.6 litre Duramax range.
Versions of this engine were
also used in the H1 Hummer for
domestic & US Government use for
the 6 ton armored HMMWW.
AS A REPLACEMENT ENGINE
The 6.5 has a lot going for it.
It is available with electronic
or mechanical fuel injection.
There is a 12-volt wire to the
fuel shut-off solenoid, and
another to the oil pressure
gauge, so wiring on the very
popular mechanical pump is easy.
This together with sealed
hydraulic roller cam followers,
a double roller timing chain and
mechanical indirect fuel
injection make the 6.5 a
reliable, low maintenance
proposition. For these reasons,
this engine is the natural
choice for rural Australia, for
simplicity, robustness and
longevity.
You can expect 500,000
kilometres from a new 6.5.
SUPERCHARGING
Install a supercharger and
you’ve got crazy amounts of
torque, capable of pulling the
heaviest of loads. Supercharging
the 6.5 is a better option to
turbo charging the 400ci unit.
The turbo creates a substantial
exhaust restriction and diesel
engines need to breath. By
opting for the supercharged
alternative, you free that
restriction, and you eliminate
the heat retention created by
the turbo at the rear of the
cylinder head, which makes turbo
engines prone to head cracking.
Unlike the turbo, the
supercharger is belt driven off
of the crankshaft, and delivers
increased torque from idle, all
the way through the rev range.
Enjoy exceptional power without
TURBO LAG and experience instant
throttle response when towing or
extreme four wheel driving.

The output of the normally
aspirated & turbo 6.5 ranges
between 180-215 bhp
(134kw-160kw) with torque
figures between 360 & 440 lb ft
(488-597nm) These engines were
matched to the 4L80E gearbox in
the US for Chevy Suburban
models, and these gearboxes too,
are available from Bullet
Diesel.
Bullet’s range of Supercharged
engines include; 250HP, 275HP,
300HP & 350HP units, with custom
upgrade units to 400HP also
available.
In 2001, DMAX, a joint venture
between General Motors Diesel
and Isuzu, designed and began
production of the 6.6 litre
replacement for the 6.5 in the
Chevy & GMC light truck range.
By mid 2007 DMAX had produced in
excess of 1,000,000 of the 402.7
cu. in. units.
This range of engine utilized
multi-valve technology, sporting
a 32-valve design with
high-pressure common-rail direct
injection, and aluminium
cylinder heads with a
compression ratio of 17.5:1. The
Duramax is a quieter diesel
engine so well designed and
problem free, that GM warrantee
the Duramax for 7 years/200,000
miles. This engine (known as the
LB7 code 1) was on the Ward’s
Best Engine list in 2001 & 2002,
and was the power plant for the
Chevrolet Silverado & GMC Sierra
light trucks.
The second generation Duramax
(the LLY code 2) 2004-2005
implemented emission
requirements, introducing
exhaust gas recirculation (EGR)
This engine was fitted to the
2006 H1 Hummer Alpha, and
continued as the power plant for
the Silverado & Sierra. The LLY
Turbo Duramax produced between
250 bhp (190kw) and 360 bhp
(270kw) and up to 650 lb ft
(881nm) of torque.
In 2006 the updated LLY (code 2)
and LBZ (code D) were brought
into the range & were mated to
the new Allison 6 speed
transmission, which is also
available through Bullet Diesel.
The compression ratio was
reduced to 16.8:1 and the piston
pin bore diameter was increased
for added strength, as too was
the “I” section of the
connecting rods. The late model
inter-cooled turbo factory
versions of the Duramax produce
397 bhp (300kw) and 765 lb ft
(1037nm) of torque.
ROAD OR MARINE
Both the 6.5 Chev and 6.6
Duramax are available in a
variety of configurations for
both automotive & marine
applications. Bullet Diesel can
supply engines from the entire
range of these power plants, and
all the components needed to fit
these engines to your 4WD or
watercraft.
At Bullet Diesel, we are
constantly developing,
re-designing and improving
aspects of these engines,
enhancing their performance,
economy and reliability.
We already manufacture custom
intake manifolds, performance
headers, exhaust and a host of
other performance add-on to make
your V8 diesel the most
impressive & responsive power
plant for your 4WD or marine
vessel.
